Thailand is confident of reaching its 1.8-million-vehicle production target this year

BANGKOK, March 29 (TNA) - Thai automotive operators are confident that Thailand can reach its target of producing 1.8 million vehicles this year despite impact from Japan.
Thanatorn Juengrungruengkij, vice chairman of Thai Summit Group, a major auto parts manufacturer in Thailand, said the Thai automotive industry would grow more than expected this year and the country would produce 1.8 million vehicles despite problems in Japan, which is the major auto parts supplier. He predicts that the positive economic growth of Thailand will support local demand for vehicles and will ensure the continued growth of the Thai automotive industry.
Thanatorn added that Thailand has potential to become the center of automotive production across Southeast Asia due to its superior infrastructure relative to other countries in the region. Foreign investors, especially from Japan, still consider Thailand as their best automotive production base within Southeast Asia. However, Thailand must continue investing in the research and development of its automotive technology as well as educating its workers. In the meantime, the government should adjust its automotive taxes to attract foreign investors.
Suparat Sirisuwannangkun, an executive of Toyota Motor Thailand, said the disaster in Japan would temporarily reduce the amount of vehicles produced in Thailand but the production should return to normal in the near future. The overall production of vehicles in Thailand is still progressing as expected and Toyota vehicles will amount to 685,000 units, accounting for approximately 40% of the 1.8-million-vehicle target this year.
