Thailand to send power plant to serve Japanese people

BANGKOK, March 29 (TNA) - The state-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will send a power generating plant to Tokyo to serve people in Japan over the next 3-5 years, as requested by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of Japan's troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The Thai Ministries of Energy and Foreign Affairs and the Japanese Embassy to Thailand told the public of the initiative at a press conference they jointly held in Bangkok on Tuesday--during which Thai Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul said that EGAT has been authorised by the Thai government to ship the Nong Jok power station with its gas-turbine generators to Tokyo to ensure power supply for Japanese consumers during the agreed period.

Dr. Wannarat noted that the Nong Jok power plant, with its total power production capacity of 244 megawatts, is now an EGAT reserved power station which is run by more costly diesel fuel and is, thus, only used when demand for power in Thailand reaches peaks levels or during special occasions.

According to the Thai energy minister, the Nong Jok power station will be sent to Tokyo by sea. The station will be dismantled over the next month to facilitate its shipment so that the Thai power station, following its reassembling, will start its operation under TEPCO for its temporary mission in August 2011.
