Transportation in Thai south suspended from floods

BANGKOK, March 29 (TNA) - Flooding in southern Thailand has had a negative impact on various modes of transport, with damage on railway tracks rising above those recorded 3 months ago, says Yuthana Thapcharoen, the State Railway of Thailand governor.

Governor Yuthana made the remark on Tuesday, saying rising flood levels have affected tracks from the Tha Chana railway station to the Surat Thani and the Chaiya stations, with south-bound trains being able to reach only the Chai Ya station currently, while track repairs were expected to begin only after floods subside.

Wuthichart Kalayanamit, managing director of Transport Co, said flooding affected its inter-provincial bus services in Surat Thaini and Ranong provinces and the state enterprise would reroute its buses based on flood information.

Regarding passenger boat and port services in southern Thailand, Thawalrat Onsira, director-general of the Marine Department, said monsoons and strong waves in many provinces have led to the suspension of tourist boat services between Ko Samui island and the Don Sak port, as they are experiencing waves of up to 4 meters high.

Meanwhile, Onsire said he was aware that many tourists are stuck on the islands, and that he was considering deploying helicopters and patrol boats to rescue them immediately after the sea calms. (TNA)
