Flooding in Thai south worsens

SURATHANI, March 29 (TNA) - Heavy showers continue to flood the local township in southern Thai Surathani Province, particularly in Chaiya District, where up to 500 homes have been stranded after strong currents tore local bridges down. Official reports also confirmed that the Chaiya District Head, Chamnan Mai-inn, was still missing after being washed away by the floods while he was delivering relief support Tuesday morning.
Similar devastation also occurred in six districts of Trang, namely Muang, Huay Yod, Ratda, Na Yong, Yaan Ta Khao, and Pa Lean, where up to 3,000 homes have been submerged, affecting about 8,000 locals, and up to 10,000 hectares of rubber and palm plantations.
So Haemkul, from the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office, confirmed that due to last nights' ongoing heavy downpours several local rivers have burst their banks, with over 2 metre high floods reported at Mae Nam Trang River, forcing locals to use boats to ease their daily lives.
In Krabi, the heavy rainfall caused Klong Krabi Yai Canal to overflow inflicting widespread flooding across the city with flood levels reaching as high as 2 meters in some areas.
Due to the extreme flooding around the canal, authorities were forced to send two flatboats to help evacuate people residing in the area to a safe place. However, the evacuation mission was slowed by the continued rising water-level and rapid flow of water. Furthermore, water from Klong Krabi Yai Canal flowed into Klong Talad Kao Canal causing widespread damage to local residences there.
Meanwhile, continued heavy rain in Ranong raised the water-level in Klong Bang Hin Canal, as residents living in Kapoe District had to evacuate their homes due to a fear of flash floods. They have also been advised to closely monitor the flooding situation in the near future. (TNA)
