Radiation background in Russian Primorye remains normal
VLADIVOSTOK, March 29 (Itar-Tass) - The radiation background has
remained normal in Russia's Primorye within the past 24 hours, the press service of the emergencies ministry's regional department reported on Tuesday.
It reports that as of 9 am local time (2 am Moscow time) on Tuesday, the radiation background comprised four microroentgen per hour which is below the permissible level of 30 microroentgen.
Twenty-nine radiation control stations monitor the situation.
Specialists take samples of water, foodstuffs, construction materials,
timber as well as sea water following the accident at the Fukushima
nuclear power plant in Japan. Water from all reservoirs supplying the
southern Primorye with water is checked for radiation.
Passengers and cargoes arriving from Japan are checked for radiation at all nine border check points. Starting from March 11, when a powerful earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, 15 sea vessels have arrived in Primorye from Japan.
All in all over 4,300 checks of radiation background have been made since March 11, and the level has always remained normal.
