All arrested LHWs to be released, Taj Haider instructs lawyers to move court, assures regularization of service

Karachı (PPI) - Media Coordinator to Sindh government Taj Haider on Monday assured the Lady Health Workers LHWs of resolving their genuine problems including regularization of service.

“The government stands by its commitment made earlier,” he said adding that the government is following the policy of bringing an end to ad hoc-ism in employment sector given by President Asif Ali Zardari.

Talking to a delegation of LHWs Employees Organization, Sindh chapter, consisting of its provincial president Khair-u-Nisa Memon and general secretary Shahnaz Ranjhani, who accompanied by Ms. Farhat of National Organization of Working Communities, called on him at his office here, Taj Haider said the issue was already discussed with representatives of LHWs in a meeting and the he had talked to federal secretary health in this regard as the health ministry has not yet been devolved to provinces, but all of sudden they started agitation blocking the national highway at Sindh-Punjab border resulting in unfortunate situation.

On the request of LHWs delegation, who wanted release of 39 employees including 32 female and 07 male employees, Taj Haider assured them of release of all the arrested employees adopting the legal procedure and talked to the lawyers in this regard.

According to the lawyers, the arrested male and female employees could be released in a day or two through the court. Taj Haider also talked to some party leaders for arranging personal surety for the release of LHWs.

The Ghotki district police had booked the agitating LHWs under Anti-Terrorism laws and now the Anti-Terrorism Court Sukkur would be moved for their release.

Taj Haider sympathized with LHWs saying that PPP being a popular party was striving for resolving the problems of masses and in this case too would fulfil its commitment. “We have lots of respect for womenfolk being our sisters, daughters and mothers and we would not let them suffer.

It may be mentioned that 130, 000 LHWs were appointed in the country under National Health Program which started in 1994 in the second tenure of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. It aimed at serving the rural and grass-root women throughout Pakistan. The program had envisioned information dissemination and provision of basic health to all women of country. For this purpose, Lady Health Workers (LHWs), Lady Health Supervisors (LHSs), drivers, and accounts staff were deputed to run the program. Initially, the program had focused only on basic health but later, all grass-root initiatives including vaccination, dealing with epidemics, viral infections, and emergency situation were added in the responsibilities of Lady Health Workers and Lady Health Supervisors.

The LHWs have not been regularized even after 16 years and surprisingly Rs.3200/- are paid monthly to LHW and Rs.5000/- to Lady Health Supervisor.
