PM assigns authorities to help flood victims in Thai South

BANGKOK, March 28 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Monday that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has assigned concerned ministers and southern MPs to send immediate assistance to flood victims in Thailand's southern region.
Suthep, who oversees national security, admitted that it was difficult to prevent flooding in the Thai South because of its vast and low areas, but the Thai government will order improvements of local roads which block the flows of rainwater to facilitate drainage in southern areas.
Meanwhile, Bangkok Airways have cancelled all its flights landing on and taking off from the Samui Airport in the flood-hit Surat Thani Province until inundations ease.
Downpours have also continued in Chumphon Province, where flooding has covered six districts affecting over 20,000 local villagers and costing over 10 million baht damage to the province.
In Trang Province, floods have remained in six districts and about 5,000 local people have been in troubles; while over 16 square kilometers of rubber and oil palm plantations have been inundated and more than 100 houses were hit by a flash flood from Banthad mountain range.
Vichit Chantarapan, disaster prevention and mitigation chief of Songkhla province, said downpours, a high tide and floodwater from Phatthalung were flowing into the Songkhla Lake caused floods in local paddy fields next to the lake. (TNA)
