ASEAN leaders to discuss progress on AEC

BANGKOK, March 28 (TNA) - Leaders from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will discuss progress of the establishment the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 in their 2011 summit in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, scheduled for May 7-8.

ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan has acknowledged that progress has been seen in preparations for the AEC, but some areas need to be accelerated, including the regional open-sky policy, as ASEAN member states have not yet ratified an agreement on or realized the regional aviation liberalization--although they have agreed with the policy.

Besides, Surin said, ASEAN member states have not yet synchronized their standard of cargo examination and reduced non-tariff barriers to regional trade. According to the ASEAN chief, member states will also have to speed up relevant actions and solve the problem of non-transparency.

Surin noted that the ASEAN private sector has not yet benefited from regional free trade agreements or the establishment of the AEC. Therefore, ASEAN member countries should consider how to support ASEAN companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to tap available benefits from the regional trade liberalization.
