Thailand to woo nearly 20m int'l tourists

BANGKOK, March 28 (TNA) - Thailand plans to soon attract some 17 million international visitors, as new information technologies (IT) have now been introduced to boost the country’s tourism industry.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has acknowledged that tourism is a major Thai industry where a number of jobs have been created and has accounted for some 7 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Abhisit said that the number of international tourist arrivals in Thailand last year reached 15.8 million, earning the Kingdom over 585 billion baht tourism-related revenues, and that IT should now come into play to further promote the Thai tourism industry.

According to the Thai premier, tourism-related revenues have also constituted a major asset for other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Abhisit said Thailand, in cooperation with other ASEAN countries, is applying IT, including available online social networks, to facilitate global tourists under an “e-travel” scheme aimed to boost confidence among international tourists in the Kingdom's accountability and safety for tourism.
