Aftershocks in Myanmar affect Thai border areas

CHIANG RAI, March 28 (TNA) - People in Mae Sai District of Thailand's northern Chiang Rai Province, bordering Myanmar, have still spent the night outside their homes due to fears that their buildings could collapse following a series of aftershocks in the wake of a strong earthquake rocking the neighbouring country on March 24.

Several households in Mae Sai have built temporary shelters near their homes and have relied on bonfire outdoors to keep themselves warm amid the cold weather at nights and early mornings.

Strong tremors could be felt in Mae Sai and other Thai border areas when a powerful earthquake shook Myanmar's cities just across the border, including Tachilek, last Thursday night with a series of aftershocks. The Myanmar quake killed a sleeping 55-year-old Thai woman in Mae Sai from a collapse of a wall in her own house and damaged many ancient sites in Chiang Rai and other adjacent northern Thai provinces.

Meanwhile, Myanmar people in Tachilek have crossed the border to buy consumer products, including rice, instant noodles, eggs and meat, in the Thai side for fears of more earthquakes or aftershocks. (TNA)
