Thai PM promises to have quake-damaged archeological sites repaired soon

BANGKOK, March 28 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has promised that his government will assist local people in areas affected by a strong earthquake rocking Myanmar last week and will have their damaged buildings and archeological sites rehabilitated or repaired soon.

During his morning weekly programme, "Confidence in Thailand with Premier Abhisit", which was broadcast nationwide, Abhisit invited authorities concerned, including chief of Thailand's National Disaster Warning Center and governors of northern provinces affected by the March 24 quake in Myanmar, namely Chiang Rai and Nan, to discuss impacts of the strong tremor.

Abhisit said that he has already been informed by the Thai Ministry of Culture on damaged religious and archeological sites in the affected provinces, and that their rehabilitations or repairs will start soon.

The Thai premier noted that his government will also conduct surveys on old buildings in the country which may not be able to withstand earthquakes and authorities concerned will then give suitable recommendations to owners of the ageing buildings.

The National Disaster Warning Center chief insisted that his center is monitoring updated developments around the clock in order to issue swift warnings or reliable statements to local people through all channels, advising the Thai public to follow up reports and instructions from relevant government agencies. According to official reports, last week's earthquake in Myanmar killed a 55-year-old Thai woman and affected over 89,100 others, as well as damaged parts of 519 houses, 23 high-rise buildings, 39 religious and archeological sites and 66 government offices in Thailand, mostly in Chiang Rai Province.

Meanwhile, the Thai government has donated three million baht to assist people in Myanmar who have been affected by the strong quake on last Thursday night, which killed at least 75 and injured more than 100 others. (TNA)
