Several areas in Thai South submerged by heavy floods

BANGKOK, March 28 (TNA) - Several areas in Thailand's southern region have remained heavily submerged caused by continuing downpours and flash floods, prompting local authorities to have declared the flood-stricken areas in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phattalung and Chumphon Provinces disaster zones with immediate assistance dispatched to people in the affected areas.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, which has been hardest hit by the ongoing, but off-season, inundations, aviation authorities have ordered a temporary suspension of all flights landing on and taking off the Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport, where its main runways were submerged by a 30-50 centimetre-flooding water. Heavily-flooded roads surrounding the airport have also blocked traffic between the provincial aviation centre and other areas. Local authorities reported today that ad-hoc relief centres have been set up in 20 out of 23 districts of the province battered by the heavy floods with immediate assistance being dispatched to more than 27,600 affected households in some 630 villages. Three fatalities from the 1-3 metre-inundations in Nakhon Si Thammarat have been reported so far.

In Phattalung, all the province's 10 districts have been declared flood-stricken disaster zones, with some areas being under submerged by as high as 1-3-metre flooding water; while relief assistance has been dispatching to affected residents.

In Surat Thani, Chumphon and Trang, several districts have also been heavily flooded affecting thousands of villagers; while urgent assistance has been sent to them.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department's southern region office has warned people on the south-eastern coast, especially those in Phattalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Chumphon, of continuing heavy downpours until Monday (Mar 28) with possible flash floods and landslides. Small trawlers have also been advised to remain on shore due to strong winds and 2-3 meter-high waves during this period. (TNA)
