Thailand observes "60+ Earth Hour 2011"

BANGKOK, Mar 27 (TNA) - Thailand, as previous years, observed the global "60+ Earth Hour 2011" campaign Saturday night (Mar 26)--when lights were switched off from 8:30-9:30pm to save energy and ease the global warming problem.

Local households and other buildings in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima and several other areas across Thailand joined the "60+ Earth Hour 2011" 2011 event.

In Bangkok, the central venue to observe the annual global campaign was changed from CentralWorld shopping complex to City Hall.

More than 4,600 cities in 128 countries worldwide reportedly joined the one-hour campaign. Thai authorities said that some 2,346 megawatts of power were saved in Bangkok alone from the "60+ Earth Hour 2011" event; while about 1,255 tonnes of carbon dyoxide emissions were reduced, saving the capital some 6.6 million baht totally.
