There are no irregularities in baht movement: BOT

BANGKOK, March 26 (TNA) - The Bank of Thailand (BOT) says that there are no irregularities in the movement of Thai baht and in the foreign capital flows in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan on March 11.

BOT Assistant Governor Pongpen Ruengvirayudh acknowledged that the Thai central bank has closely monitored the situation in the currency exchange market following the March 11 devastating disaster in Japan, but no irregularities have been detected in the movement of the Thai currency and in the foreign capital flows, as a selling pressure by foreign investors on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has remained normal.

Pongpen assessed that Thai exports could, however, be affected by the historic disaster in Japan in the short term, but in the long run, the Thai export sector should benefit as Japan will import more goods, particularly food products, in larger volumes.

According to the senior BOT official, it is believed that Japan will also shift its production base to other countries, including Thailand, to reduce risks of a feared natural calamity in the future. (TNA)
