Over 1,000 tall buildings in Bangkok at risk of quakes

BANGKOK, March 26 (TNA) - Deputy Bangkok Governor Pornthep Techapaibul has reported that some 1,200 tall buildings in Bangkok appear to be at risk from any powerful earthquake.
Pornthep said that about a dozen of the high-rise buildings in the capital are particularly at risk from a strong tremor and their safety measures against earthquakes need to be improved due to their locations in densely-populated areas.
Pornthep noted that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has notified owners of all the tall buildings at risk so that they can raise their buildings safety against a strong quake to meet international standards with the help from the Engineering Institute of Thailand. But the City Authority did not publicly name the skyscrapers at risk.
The deputy governor made the remarks followed a powerful earthquake rocking Myanmar Thursday night with a series of aftershocks. The strong tremor also shook several areas in Thailand, mostly located near the Thai-Myanmar border, and even high buildings in Bangkok. A 55-year-old Thai woman in Mae Sai District of Thailand's northern Chiang Rai Province also died from the tremor.
Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said that he will call a meeting with agencies concerned next week to discuss and work out safety measures against natural disaster, particularly a strong earthquake, in the capital. (TNA)
