Minister for Social Welfare urged the civil society to play active role for the child protection

Peshawar, March 25, 2011 (PPI): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Social Welfare & Women Development, Sitara Ayaz has urged the civil society to play their active role for the child protection as a protected child is the prospect of a bright future for any society. Every individual of the society should protect the rights of children This, she said, while addressing the participants of a seminar on the Recommended Minimum Standards of Care for Children living in alternative care homes organized by the Legal Aid Cell Child Rights Unit) at a local hotel in Peshawar.

She said that the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has put serious efforts for the women rights and especially for the child protection. The minister said for this purpose first time in the history of this province, the Child Protection Bill was passed unanimously by the Assembly which has now been implemented in the form of Act.

Sitara Ayaz pointed out that a commission has been constituted in this regard and recently a Child Protection Bureau has also been established at Peshawar while child protection units will be established in the other districts of the province.

The minister added that street child, taken into the custody by the government, will be handed over to their relatives through court by taking the guarantee to provide best care and support. The minister said that the Rehbar toll free service has also been started by the government in districts eshawar, Swabi and Mardan where the people could easily lodge their complaints relating to child labour, child abuse and other problems facing by the children.

The provincial minister said that large numbers of children have been affected by the previous floods and terrorism in the province and a survey was in the progress. The provincial government’s top most priority to compensate the affectees.

She maintained that the provincial government will establish international standard orphanages where needed. They will be provided best facilities and opportunities in it so that they could play their due role in the national development, she added. Program Officer AGHS (Child Rights Unit) Qudsia Majeed, SOS villages Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chairperson Mrs. Khola Mustafa and Prof. Javed Hussain also addressed on the occasion.
