Chiang Rai Province monitors impact from Myanmar quake

CHIANG RAI, March 25 (TNA) - The people in Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai Province continued to monitor public spaces for structural damages on Friday, after a massive earthquake rocked neighbouring Myanmar Thursday night, sending aftershocks into the region.

Nopparat Uthong, director of Chiang Rai’s primary education office, confirmed building checks are being held at schools in the area which may have been damaged from the 6.8 magnitude quake in Northeast Myanmar on Thursday.

Nopparat said the assessments will aim to point out any outlying risks from the tremor but dismissed any immediate effect on students and teachers, particularly due to the arriving summer holiday.

Sizable damage to historic sites in Chiang Rai have been reported at the 700-year-old Wat Phra That Chedi Luang Temple in Chiang Saen District, as well as at Wat Phra That Chom Kitti Temple and Wat Phra That Phu Khao, currently all unauthorised entry to the sites have been barred. (TNA)
