Flooding in Thai South

PHATTHALUNG, March 25 (TNA) - Heavy downpours in southern Thailand have caused flash floods in as many as six districts of Phatthalung province, with a highway bridging the city to Trang submerged in water of heights up to about 50 centimeters.

The downpour in Phatthalung Thursday night caused floods in plane areas of six districts, namely Muang, Khuan Khanoon, Kong Ra, Srinakarin, Pa Phayom and Khao Chaison. The floods have affected about 3,000 families in 105 villages as well as over 20,000 rai or 32 square kilometers of rubber plantations and paddy fields. A flashflood from Banthad mountain range struck Phetkasem highway between Phatthalung and Trang provinces leaving over two kilometers of highway 50 centimeters under water.

Similar downpours over the past three days in Nakhon Si Thammarat province caused 50-70-centimeter-deep floods in low areas of Soi Moom Pom, Soi Pratu Khao, Soi Ram Raj Thai Nam, Soi Wat Tha Pho, Thanon Saphan Yao and Thanon Thewaburi. Authorities at Nakhon Si Thammarat municipality were seen using flat boats to evacuate people and their belongings from the affected areas.

Torsak Wanijkhajon, director-general of the Meteorological Department, said heavy rains would continue in the South in the next 3-4 days. He warned people in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Trang and Satun provinces of possible flash floods. He also warned boat operators to take precautions and owners of small boats to stay onshore due to swells ranging from 2-3 meters in height. (TNA)
