International tennis tournament in Karachi begins 28th March

Karachi, March 24, 2011 (PPI): Karachi Gymkhana is organizing International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned PIA International Senior World Ranking Tennis Championship from 28th March to 3rd April here at its Tennis courts.

However, the international event has meagre international participation as only Georgian player, who is living here and heads UNICEF in Sindh-Balochistan region has confirmed his participation.

Meanwhile, two other Frenchmen, who are here for some personal business, have also shown interest but not yet confirmed their entry, whose dead-line is 26th March.

No other foreign participation is expected and there would none here exclusively to participate in the tournament.

“The attack on Sri Lankan cricket team has hit us far more than it hit cricket Pakistan. It was an unfortunate event. However, it has spoiled tennis as no players want to come here and every team back off to compete here even in their Davis Cup tie,” former tennis player Saeed Hai told reporters here Thursday at Karachi Gymkhana.

The former PTF vice president categorically asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to compensate all the damage done to other sports due to the reason that it failed even to protect a single team.

He said that PCB earns a lot of money and it is the richest sports body in Pakistan, therefore it should help out other sports in order to lift them out of the idle sports action in the aftermath of the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team.

“No foreign tennis player is ready to come here, showing security concerns. We have been continuously losing our Davis Cup hosting rights and our players always have to play on their opponents home-ground, even when the original hosting rights were given to Pakistan. This gives the opponents great deal of advantage,” he lamented.

He further said that they had sent invitation to 40 countries but none of them agreed to participate.

Events in the tournament include seniors 45 plus singles and doubles, seniors 55 plus singles and doubles and seniors 60 plus doubles.
