Thailand not yet imposes ban on farm products from Japan

BANGKOK, March 24 (TNA) - The Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut confirmed on Thursday that Thailand has not yet imposed a ban on any food or other farm products imported from disaster-hit Japan.
Theera said that his ministry's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet issued a directive prohibiting imports of agricultural products, including food items, from Japan, as no radiation contamination has been detected in Thailand from any farm product shipped from Japan so far.
Theera noted that the concerned Thai authorities are also looking into the World Trade Organisation (WTO)'s rules to see whether such the ban would be legitimate.
The Thai agriculture and cooperatives minister insisted that his ministry, in conjunction with Thailand's Office of Atoms for Peace, has intensified inspections of farm products imported from Japan.
Meanwhile, the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives' Department of Agricultural Extension and Cooperative Promotion has signed an agreement with the Thai Ministry of Commerce's Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) to cooperate to provide relevant knowledge and promote insurance welfares to more than 25 million Thai farmers across the country, covering the protection of their farm produce to ensure their social and occupational security.
