Thailand inspects vegetables imported from Japan

BANGKOK, March 24 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health and other related agencies have begun strictly inspecting fruit and vegetables imported from Japan's Honshu Island, where a massive earthquake and tsunami earlier this month led to radiation leaks from a nuclear power plant. It has now been officially reported that locally-produced food could be harmful to humans.
Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that strict measures were imposed on Thursday, ensuring the inspection of every single item of fruit or vegetables imported from the Honshu Island.
Jurin revealed that local importers, who have been asked to cooperate with the new move, are only allowed to sell Japanese fruit and vegetables imported from the radiation-tainted region if the items are officially certified free of radiation contamination, and added that official testing processes should take no more than 24 hours.
Jurin urged local entrepreneurs to avoid importing such products from the Island until the problem is resolved.
He also acknowledged that Thailand has not been importing milk or other dairy products from Japan, and that seafood products from the country have been randomly inspected on a daily basis. (TNA)
