Thai meteorological agencies to integrate their work

BANGKOK, March 24 (TNA) - Thailand's disaster prevention, warning, and mitigation agencies are setting out to improve their work system in an integrated manner in a bid to lower the potential impacts of disasters on civilians.

On the World Meteorological Day, the Thai Meteorological Department in coordination with the Thai national disaster prevention center, and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation held a seminar to discuss ways to help them deal with future disasters better.

Thosakdi Vanichkajorn, Director-General of Department of Meteorology, said his department aims to improve the effectiveness of its works on weather forecasts and disaster warnings and also plans to set up more quake-watch and-warning offices to extend service supplies nationwide.

Meanwhile, Montree Chanachaivi-boonwat, director of the disaster management policy bureau, said the government has laid down a 5-year plan with aims to set up a database where relevant agencies can share information among themselves and with Japanese authorities, one of the most well-prepared nations for disasters. This way, Thai and Japanese agencies can cooperate to formulate a disaster warning and mitigation plan. (TNA)
