Chalerm resigns as Thai MP

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - Chalerm Yubamrung, a key member of Thailand’s opposition Puea Thai Party, has tendered his resignation as MP. The resignation took effect on Wednesday but party’s spokesman denied there was any kind of internal rift.

Chalerm, chairman of Puea Thai MPs, had his aide Sa-nguan Klaewkla tender his resignation to house speaker Chai Chidchob through the secretariat of the house, without citing any reasons on the decision. He simply stated that he wanted his resignation to take immediate effect.

Puea Thai's spokesman, Prompong Nopparit, later told reporters that along with his resignation, Chalerm forfeited his position as the Puea Thai MP chairman. According to the spokesman, Chalerm did not inform the party of any reasons for his resignation either. A close aide said that Chalerm remained a Puea Thai member and a key campaigner for the party in the North and the Northeast.

Prompong denied that Chalerm’s resignation should give any indication that Puea Thai has an internal rift. He said that the party’s executive board would talk with Chalerm and give him new responsibilities to help the party with the upcoming general election, before adding that Puea Thai would introduce more new candidates in April.

At 1.30pm the same day, US ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kenney paid a courtesy call to Puea Thai Party leader Yongyuth Vichaidit to mark the occasion of resuming her office. They met at the Puea Thai headquarters for about 30 minutes, and according to Kenney, discussed politics and the upcoming general election in general without any particular focus. She also made very clear that “no matter which political parties win or lose in the election, the US will maintain good relations with all political parties. I will meet leaders of political parties later.”

The Puea Thai spokesman said that the US ambassador asked the party leader about the outlook of Thai politics and the direction and activities of the Puea Thai Party. He said the party was ready for the next general election and would introduce its leader and Prime minister candidate once the house has been dissolved. It will field candidates in all constituencies and is confident of victory and the right to form the next government. Prompong added that the US ambassador praised Puea Thai for complying with democratic principles and promised her close cooperation with the party. (TNA)
