Progress made regarding royal pardon request for two Thais in Cambodia

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - According to Thani Thongpakdee, director-general of the Information Department under the Thai Foreign Ministry, a lot of progress has been made regarding the seeking of a royal pardon for Veera Somkwamkid and Miss Ratree Pipatanapaibul who are current detained in Phnom Penh.

He said that the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh sent the written pardon request, signed by both detainees, to the Cambodian Foreign Ministry on March 14.

Thani said that the concerned within the Ministry has already received the request and that it is under consideration. He also said Veera was recovering from his illness.

Asked if a political shift in Thailand would affect the request for a Cambodian royal pardon for both Thai people, Thani said that should not have any impact because the Thai Foreign Ministry was duty-bound to help its citizens, when in troubled overseas. However, he admitted the success of the petition will depend on Cambodia and the details of the cases themselves. (TNA)
