700 Thai people in Japan unreachable by Foreign Ministry

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - The Thai Foreign Ministry has reported that while the situation in Japan is stabilising, about 700 Thai people are still missing.

Thani Thongpakdee, director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Information Department, quoted Thai Airways International stating that the cabin factor of flights from Japan to Thailand stood at about 50%, which means that a portion of all the Thai people who wanted to return to Thailand have already done so.

Since March 12, 9,000 Thai people have returned to the homeland, out of some 40,000 Thai people who used to live in Japan. Requests have been made by the relatives of 2,300 Thais residing in Japan, while the Foreign Ministry has been able to contact just 1,600, meaning around 700 remain missing.

According to the Japanese immigration authorities, 488 Thai people live in the affected Iwate, Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures, 188 of which have been contacted. (TNA)
