Thunderstorms hurl across Thailand

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - Thunderstorms brought on by the air mass from China, have reportedly swamped the Thai capital of Bangkok and its seaside neighbour, Pattaya, causing widespread traffic Wednesday morning.

In Bangkok, heavy downpours ongoing since early dawn have flooded roads up to heights of about 20-30 centimetres. Sunya Cheenimit, who is director of the Metropolitan Drainage Department, said he expects normal road usage to be possible by afternoon, with excess water to be removed quickly by the authorities.

In Pattaya city, Chonburi, rainfalls continued for more than 8 hours up until morning, causing widespread congestion from submerged roads as strong winds brought down trees onto houses and destroyed large billboards. Rescue workers were seen giving assistance in devastated areas, particularly at Kanchanaburi locality, where flood levels reached a height of nearly 1 foot.

Similar reports were confirmed in Kantharalak District in northeastern Si Sa Ket, where hail storms damaged homes and school buildings, prompting local people to remain indoors.

Meanwhile, showers throughout the week in northern Chiang Mai have nearly caused several rivers to overflow, most notably at the Lam Nam Wang waterway, which had once been almost empty. (TNA)
