Thai government orders careful review on nuclear power plant projects

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - Problems at a nuclear power plant in Japan, triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, have sparked international concern about the negative impacts of the technology. In Thailand, the energy minister has ordered a careful review of its nuclear power projects and confirmed he will not be proposing such projects to this government.

Energy Minister Wannarat Charnnukul has opened a meeting on energy cooperation and mutual energy and fuel supplies among Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Representatives from Korea were also invited to the session to share their knowledge about energy and its networking.

During the opening ceremony, Mr Wannarat said Thailand had originally planned to build five nuclear power plants over the next five years but that the earthquake and tsunami in Japan had prompted it to carefully review the plan. He has assigned a working group to study if nuclear power is really necessary for Thailand and if it is how the development of plants should be conducted.

The working group will also look for alternative sources of power. Electricity generation may have to depend on natural gas, clean coal or supplies from neighboring countries such as Laos. However, he noted that it was risky to depend greatly on electricity from neighboring countries. To conclude he iterated that the relevant authorities have not reached any final decision on nuclear power development and that he will not be proposing such a project to this government. (TNA)
