Thailand's 77th province officially set up

BUENGKAN, March 23 (TNA) - Thailand's 77th province, Buengkan, has now been established, effective from March 23, 2011 when it is officially separated from the country's northeastern Nong Khai Province.
Thai Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul presided over a "countdown" ceremony for the newly-set up province at the Provincial Hall late Tuesday night, just minutes before it officially becomes the Kingdom's 77th province after midnight.
A large crowd of long-awaited people from all sectors in the province, including residents, officials and private business persons, took part in the auspicious event.
The new Buengkan Province, with a total area of 4,305 square kilometres and a total population of some 390,000, comprises of seven districts, including Seka, So Pisai, Bung Kla, Bueng Khong Long, Pak Kad, Porn Charoen and Sri Wilai.
Local people first proposed that Buengkan become a new Thai province in 1994, but the proposal was approved by the Thai government 17 years later. (TNA)
