Thai Cabinet approves one-month extension of ISA

BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet, at it's weekly meeting on Tuesday, approved the extension of the enforcement of Thailand's Internal Security Act (ISA) in seven areas in Bangkok. This is to be implemented from March 26 to April 24, 2011, as proposed by the Royal Thai Police.

The one-month-extended imposition of the tough law in the Thai capital's sensitive areas, is reportedly aimed to keep movements of different civic groups under control. To maintain social order and to prevent unrest stirred by third parties.

Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, in his capacity as chief of the country's Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), acknowledged that the imposition of the ISA in the Thai capital could be further extended if needed. While Thai National Police Chief, General Wichien Potephosree, expressed his confidence that local police could maintain peace and order during upcoming electoral campaigns, and the new general election.

General Potephosree also promised that metropolitan police forces would accelerate their operations to seek to return traffic flow to normal, at a main area near the Government House on Rajadamnoen Avenue in the city. This is due to the disruption caused by demonstrators of the yellow-clad People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD); who have rallied in the area for several weeks in protest against the Thai government's moves on border issues with neighbouring Cambodia.
