Thai DPM confirms House dissolution in May 2011

BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban confirmed on Tuesday that a House dissolution will definitely announced in early May, followed by a new general election within 60 days.

Suthep, who is also secretary general of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party, insisted that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will definitely dissolve the House of Representatives during May 1-10, 2011, to pave the way for an early national poll.

The Thai deputy premier for national security said that the House dissolution will be announced after organic draft bills in compliance with key amended sections of Thailand's 2007 Constitution are promulgated--in the wake of their parliamentary passages, and that he has personally endorsed the planned House dissolution during May 7-10.

Suthep acknowledged, if everything goes smoothly, Thailand's new general election is likely to be held on either July 1 or July 2, dismissing recent reports that the Thai premier would dissolve Thailand's Lower House on May 3 before announcing June 26 as the poll date.

According to the Thai Democrat deputy premier, police have been authorised to take care of peace and order in areas across the country from now on until the national poll ends with necessary measures to be taken to ensure a smooth and successful general election, including setting up of checkpoints to prevent and crack down violent plots.
