Religious leaders urged to pay key role in education development in Thailand's deep South

BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) - Islamic religious leaders have been urged to pay a key role in developing education in Thailand's deep South to improve the quality of life for local people and resolve unrest in the insurgency-plagued region.

Thailand's spiritual Islamic leader, Asis Pitakkumpol, made the call at his meeting with local Islamic leaders, including the chief of a provincial Islamic committee, in Thailand's southernmost Yala Province on Tuesday.

Asis, who is also called in Thai "Chularatchamontri", suggested that, to achieve its goals, Islamic religious leaders in Thailand's Muslim-predominated far South should actively encourage local youths to beware of the significance of education for the sake of promising them a better quality of life in the future.

The "Chularatchamontri" said that his visit was also aimed to gather first-hand information on local youths, particularly regarding education, to bring new opportunities and expand access to quality education. The plan also aims to decrease drug threats. (TNA)
