Thailand will focus on offering humanitarian aid to Libya

BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) - In response to the Libya-related resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, the Thai government has announced it will focus on providing humanitarian aid to the Libyan people.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya has confirmed that the cabinet has acknowledged his ministry's proposal regarding the best response of Thailand to the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. The proposal was made with regard to Resolution 1970 that prohibits the supply of weaponry to Libya and bans the entrance into or holding of assets in Thailand by blacklisted persons. It also deals with Resolution 1973 that prohibits the Libyan military from operating aircraft.

Mr Kasit said that Thailand would focus on offering humanitarian aid to Libya, which would be coordinated with the help of unnamed non-governmental organizations. During the recent evacuation of Thai workers from Libya, Thai authorities informed the International Organization for Migration that Thailand was ready to offer humanitarian aid including the donation of food and water to Libyan people. Mr Kasit said that as a UN member state, Thailand wanted an end to civil war and compliance to materialise with the UN’s peace-oriented resolutions.

Asked whether Thailand’s stance relating to Libya requires the consent of the parliament, Mr Kasit said that would not be necessary because it was a decsision based on principles. Besides, Thailand is not an arms trader, so it does not have to deal with any bans on arms sales.

Jessada Katawaythin, deputy director-general of the Information Department, said Tuesday afternoon that the Foreign Ministry would announce the stance of Thailand in response to the resolutions. It will call on all parties to ensure the safety of civilians, both Libyans and foreigners, and to maximize channels to deliver humanitarian aid.

Jessada said that five of a remaining 86 Thai workers in Libya have just sought their trip to return to Thailand. The Foreign Ministry has also asked the Labour Ministry to contact employers to arrange the evacuation of 15 Thai workers from Benghazi as the city is still plagued with violence. He confirmed that the Thai embassy in Tripoli is still running operations to provide Thai people in Libya with help, despite their small number. (TNA)
