Thais in Japan, confident: Ministry of Foreign Affairs

BANGKOK, March 22 - The Thai Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs has told the nation that the government and people of Japan sincerely appreciated Thailand’s recent assistance to the country, adding that Thai people in Japan are confident that authorities there will be able to bring the radiation leak crisis under control.

Just after arriving from Japan at Suvarnabhumi International Airport Monday night, Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, said that during his visit to Japan, he had inspected several areas and delivered necessities including drinking water, blankets, and torches to Japanese people, which, he says, are all in great need.

He added that the number of requests sought by Thai nationals to travel back home has considerably declined as the situation concerning radiation leaks from the nuclear power plant is being brought under control. However, he did add that contingency plans were in place in case the situation worsens. There are 4 four rally points for evacuation in Osaka and 3 flights will leave for Thailand from the airport daily.

He also said that there are still no solid figures on the number of Thais still unaccounted for because some fled the country without notifying the Royal Thai Embassy in Japan or the Royal Thai Consulate in Osaka. However, he confirmed that there have been no reports of dead Thai nationals from the network of Thai people residing in Japan. The Royal Thai Embassy in Japan has also coordinated with Japanese authorities to check the exact number of Thai nationals still in Japan, but has yet to report any figures. (TNA)
