Vietnamese and foreign scientists and experts shared experiences
Lam Dong (VNA) – Vietnamese and foreign scientists and experts shared experiences and initiatives in the implementation of the UN-initiated “Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” (REDD+) programme at a seminar in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong from March 21-23.
The seminar was jointly held by the World Bank Group (WBG) and the Institute of Salt-Marsh Forest and Land under the Vietnam Union of Scientific and Technological Associations.
At the seminar, the participants focused their discussions on the community-based programme’s role in the fight against climate change, its mechanism, administration and transparency as well as benefits local residents may receive when involving in the programme.
The initiatives, raised by Vietnamese, US, Indonesian and Cambodian representatives were lauded at the workshop and they were considered to be essential for each country, locality and person engaging in the programme in an effort to reduce gas emissions, the organising board said.
Vietnam is one of pioneers worldwide in taking actions based on the community to minimise adverse impacts of climate change in the forestry.
REDD+ has chosen Lam Dong asthe only Vietnamese province for its operation for nearly a year. Successes gained in the province will create an important foundation for the programme to fan out to other localities in Vietnam./.
