Serious efforts needed to check onslaught of TB in Pakistan
Karachi, March 21, 2011 (PPI): Nearly 50 thousand people are dying of tuberculosis (TB) in Pakistan while 0.4 million infected by the disease every year. At present some 0.7 million people are suffering from this killer disease.
This was told in a seminar held to commemorate World TB Day by Pakistan Chest Society in collaboration with Department of Chest Medicine K.V. SITE Hospital, here on Monday.
In his opening remarks, president of Pakistan Chest Society and chief guest of seminar Prof. Nadeem Rizvi said that our current year’s slogan is ‘On the move against tuberculosis’, with a goal is to inspire innovation in TB research and care.
He further said that we should have rapid TB diagnostic tests, faster and shorter treatment regimens and a fully effective vaccine. He stressed on following Pakistan Chest Society guidelines for treatment of TB.
Dr. Zafaryab Hussain, Head of Department of Chest Medicine, Valika Hospital in his address said that rate of TB in industrial workers was high than in general population, i.e., 170 per 0.1 million in worker and 158 per 0.1 million in general population.
He said that free treatment of TB is available for social security registered workers and their family at Valika Hospital as per WHO guidelines under DOTS program. He said that treatment for new cases of TB is six months and for relapse or retreatment is eight months.
He warned that failure to complete treatment, irregular treatment and inadequate treatment result in MDR TB which is not only difficult to treat but expensive and for long duration about two years.
Dr. Hina Taufiq, head of department of Gynae and Obs, Valika Hospital said that TB is commonest cause of infertility in women and lower abdominal pain adding that anti TB drugs are safe during pregnancy and mothers taking TB drugs can breast feed their infants.
Dr. Mehfooz-ur-Rehman, head of ENT Department Valika Hospital said that about 60% cases of neck gland enlargement are because of TB.
Dr.Jabbar Mirani Surgeon Valika Hospital also addressed while in the end Dr. Qazi Jalaluddin, secretary of College of Physicians and Surgeons distributed certificates.
