It's deemed unnecessary to send more Thai medical staff to Japan, says official

BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) -- No Thai people in Japan has suffered from serious illness and there is now apparently no need to send a new team of Thai medical staff to replace those whose mission ends this Thursday.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Paijit Warachit spoke of the development Monday, saying he had been informed by Dr. Pairoj Kruakanjana head of the Thai medical team operating in Japan currently that most Thai people in the disaster-battered country have only suffered from minor illness, namely catching a slight cold.

Dr. Paijit said it is, therefore, deemed unnecessary to send a new team of Thai medical staff to Japan when the mission of the present team ends this Thursday, noting that the situation in the disaster-ravaged nation has eased and part of Thai nationals in Japan has returned to Thailand.

The senior Thai health official acknowledged, however, that his ministry will discuss with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs before concluding whether a new team of Thai medical personnel should be dispatched to Japan.

Regarding to operations of another team of Thai mental health experts in Japan's disaster-affected areas at the moment, Dr. Paijit said he had also been reported that no Thai nationals were found to have suffered from serious stress or depression.

In response to recent reports that beans tainted with radioactive materials were found in Taiwan, Dr. Paijit revealed that his ministry's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stepped up its action by intensifying its inspections of imported food products to ensure safety, urging local consumers not to be panic.
