Media should promote CIS integration processes - Tajik PM

DUSHANBE, March 21 (Itar-Tass) - Mass media play an important role in
the promotion of integration processes in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), in the strengthening of friendship between peoples and cooperation among countries, Prime Minister of Tajikistan Akil Akilov said on Monday receiving participants in the XIII meeting of the Council of the Heads of CIS State News Agencies (CIS Information Council). "The media should be a platform for the promotion of democratic processes in the CIS, and the things uniting us - the ideas of friendship, internationalism, mutual assistance," he noted.
Akilov stressed the importance of expanding the CIS information space and objective coverage of the processes taking place in it. "There are many dates that unite us, and above all the younger generation should be reminded of them," he said.
Itar-Tass First Deputy Director General Mikhail Kalmykov particularly emphasised that "the state-run news media, members of the CIS Information Council cement the information space of the Commonwealth, contribute to the strengthening of partnership relations between them." Kalmykov drew attention to the fact that this year "is rich in memorable and bright events for the peoples of the Commonwealth." "We will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the CIS, 50th anniversary of the flight of the first Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, as well as other no less important dates," he
noted.
The meeting of the CIS Information Council will be held in the
Tajikistani capital on Monday. Its participants will discuss issues
related to news agencies' participation in the coverage of events of the Year of Cultural Heritage that is observed in the Commonwealth countries in 2011. The Information Council will discuss the implementation of projects, including organising a photo exhibition named "Commonwealth turns 20," the work of the news service of the Association of National News Agencies. The meeting will also discuss issues of holding a journalist contest of CIS state-run news agencies on the preservation of historical and cultural heritage, publishing a joint calendar of significant dates and events in the post-Soviet space, preparation for the publication in an electronic form of a joint collection of works, dedicated to the outstanding figures of culture, science and art.
