Thais from disaster-affected areas to be evacuated to Osaka, if needed

BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing appropriate places in Osaka to temporarily shelter Thai people who may have to be evacuated from areas in Japan affected by radiation leaks.
Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, Secretary General to the Thai Foreign Minister, said on Monday that he and other officials of the Thai Consul General in Osaka had surveyed some places considered to be appropriate shelters in case that Thai nationals must be temporarily evacuated from areas affected by radiation leaks in the wake of a massive earthquake and a devastating tsunami in Japan's northeastern region on March 11--which has triggered the lingering radiation leaks from a troubled nuclear power plant.
Chavanond revealed that his survey team had then prepared four places in the southern Japanese prefecture to cater some 8,000 Thai nationals in case of emergency, including a boxing dome, a conference hall, a sports stadium in Sakai and even the Thai Consul General itself.
According to the senior Thai official, Japan's second largest airport is located in Osaka, where international flights are available everyday, including those of Thai Airways International (THAI), the southern Japanese prefecture is, therefore, considered a most suitable area to serve as a potential evacuation centre for the affected Thai people in Japan.
