Sochi Olympic mascot - collective image showing Russia's diversity

MOSCOW, March 21 (Itar-Tass) -- Leopard, who is a member of the
Felidae family and was elected as one of the official mascots of the Sochi Olympics-2014, is a collective image, which shows Russia's diversity, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the My Planet television channel during his visit to Khakassia on Sunday.
The Olympic mascot is "a collective image, which shows that Russia is a quite diversified country," Putin said. "Our country is beautiful with its diversity and the fact that the wild car, which we are reviving and which was almost exterminated in the 50s of the previous century, shows that Russia is becoming another country. Russia cares of the wild nature, cares about its riches and restores them for future generations. This is characteristic of modern Russia," Putin believes.
The prime minister recalled that leopard and the Irbis (Snow Leopard) are members of the Felidae family. All Leopards are Panther species. "The Irbis is considered to be a separate Leopard species. In fact, the Irbis is a separate species due to its several morphological features, namely the size and the form of the head, the length of the tail and other features," Putin went on to say. He noted that our zoologists, who are studying the Irbis closely, came to conclusion that the Irbis is also a Panther species according to its genetic features.
"So, the Irbis and all Leopards, which we know and which live in our country in the Far East and the Caucasus are all panther species according to their genetic features," the prime minister noted. "Therefore, it is not quite wrong that an animal, which looks more like the Irbis, was elected (as the Olympic mascot - Itar-Tass) and is called Leopard," Putin underlined.
In late February the Sochi Olympic organizing committee elected in a national vote Leopard, Polar Bear and Hare as the Olympic official mascots. Meanwhile, Leopard gained most votes that made 28%. The International Olympic Committee approved the Sochi Olympic mascots.
