Fukushima-1 plant not to operate as station over huge damage
TOKYO, March 20 (Itar-Tass) - The stricken Fukushima-1 nuclear power
plant will not operate as a station over serious damages, said on Sunday
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, speaking at a news conference in
Tokyo.
"This is quite evident, taking into account the objective appraisal of the present situation," he noted, replying to reporters' questions.
Edano intimated at the same time that the government would not
possibly restore the station over the large-scale destructions virtually
at all six units. Specialists now continue working to restore the cooling systems at reactors from the first to the fourth units as well as to stabilise the water levels at pools where there are spent fuel rods at the fifth and sixth units.
According to earlier reports, to lower pressure at reactors and to
cool water in pools for spent fuel rods, authorities decided to pump
urgently into them sea water and boric acid when permanent water cooling
systems went dead. This move also destroys equipment and lessens chances
for its further secure operation.
