Russia ready to increase gas supply to Japan -- PM
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 20 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Prime Minister
Vladimir Putin ordered Gazprom to hold a meeting with the Japanese side to find out whether it needs extra amounts of energy, the premier's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said after the prime minister-chaired meeting in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
"If the additional need is confirmed, the Russian side will
immediately come into contact with European partners," Peskov said.
Putin put forward an initiative on Saturday to increase the supply of Russian gas to Europe through the pipelines with simultaneous LNG leaving to send it to Japan. The global swap deal between Russia and the EU can give real urgent aid to Japan, ensuring delivery of more than a million tonnes of LNG within a month.
In a hundred days, up to six billion cubic metres of pipe gas more can be delivered to Europe in the swap, and Japan, respectively, will receive up to 4 million tons of LNG.
"For the soonest stabilization of energy supply in Japan, closing of all the gaps in the electric power balance, Russia is ready to find
possibilities to increase the supply of natural gas to the country", Putin said. He explained that "already today Gazprom is ready to increase supplies of natural gas to Europe through pipelines by about 60 million cubic metres a day, equivalent to 40,000 tonnes of LNG." Thus the remaining LNG can be supplied to Japan," he said.
Russia intends to discuss the idea soon with European partners. "The initiative has not been discussed yet with the European Union. It was thoroughly considered by our specialists and as a matter of urgency with the use of communication channels will be put on the agenda," said Peskov.
According to him, consultations with the European partners will begin as soon as possible.
"This is what Russia really can do, what we can do all together," the premier's press secretary stressed.
With the Japanese side this idea has not been discussed yet either.
"But the needs of Japan are known, our specialists know the market
excellently," Peskov added.
Experts estimate that within a month Japan may need up to 100 gas
tankers with LNG to make up for the lost generation.
It's too much, and here is just the case, unprecedented, when
coordination of efforts of the international economic community is needed so that not to do damage to the gas purchasers and help Japan which needs the supply, the press secretary noted.
