Thai PM, nine ministers survive no-confidence vote

BANGKOK, March 19 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and other nine Cabinet members survived a censure motion lodged by the opposition Puea Thai Party with the majority vote this morning--ahead of a new general election set for later this year.
Abhisit survived the no-confidence motion with 249:184 votes, 11 MPs abstained and 23 others opted not cast any type of votes; while Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban won with 249:185 votes, 13 MPs abstained and 22 others did not cast any type of votes.
Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij won the no-confidence vote with 245:185, 12 MPs abstained and 22 others did not cast any type of votes; Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai got 251:186 votes, 9 MPs abstained and 23 others opted not cast any type of votes.
Other Cabinet members who also survived the opposition's four-day grilling were Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya with 247:188 votes; Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul with 250:188 votes; Transport Minister Sopon Zarum with 248:188; Information and Communication Technology Minister Chuti Krairiksh with 247:185 votes; Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Ongart Klampaiboon with 246:182 votes; and Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Supachai Phosu with 243:188 votes.
It was the third censure motion the Abhisit administration has faced since 2009. The opposition Puea Thai Party, aligned with ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra and anti-government red-shirt protesters had accused the Democrat Party-led government of mismanagement and corruption, as well as unjustified bloody crackdowns during last year's red-shirt protests resulting in 90 deaths.
Meanwhile, deputy premier Suthep, who is also secretary-general of the ruling Democrat Party announced that there would be no Cabinet reshuffle after this week's censure debate. (TNA)
