WWF disclaims rumours Far East fish and sea products dangerous

MOSCOW, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's division of the World Wide
Fund for Nature (WWF) called as untruthful the rumours in media that it is dangerous to eat fish and sea products from Russia's Far East.
"Despite some claims, Pollack from the Sea of Okhotsk and Bering was not affected as it does not migrate to the Pacific Ocean, and besides the current level of radiation may influence fish only in the food chain, not directly," Head of Sea Programme of Russia's WWF Konstantin Zgurovsky said. "Radiation may accumulate in bottom organisms, which filter water."
WWF supports the necessity to monitor environment around Japan and to trace where fish products come from.
"It is tough to say as yet how the situation at Japan's nuclear
stations may affect the ecology system of the Pacific Ocean," he
continued. "Everything will depend on how things develop there, as yet all emissions spread by the wind across vast areas of the Pacific Ocean and their influence is not high."
"Panic is unnecessary, but permanent monitoring is a must," he said.
"The Far East fisherman have asked the local research centre to check
produced fish and sea products, as they are interested themselves to prove their products comply with all international norms."
Russia's WWF presented its condolences to Japan.
