Thai exports make all-time monthly peak in February 2011

BANGKOK, March 18 (TNA) - Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said on Friday that the value of Thai exports made its all-time high in February 2011, to 18.87 billion US dollars or a 31-per cent year-on-year surge, thanks to increasing demand for Thai products worldwide and the recovering world economy.
Porntiva reported that Thai exports rose in all categories last month, namely agricultural and agro-industrial products rose by 32.8 per cent while key industrial exports went up by 29.9 per cent, and that Thai exports which grew by over 20 per cent included electrical appliances, automobiles, plastic pellets and plastic products.
Porntiva said that the value of Thai exports in the first two months of this year amounted to 35.62 billion US dollars, a 26.7 per cent-year-on-year increase, and that her ministry expected that total Thai export could grow by some 10 per cent on average this year, worth about 215 billion US dollars.
The Thai commerce minister acknowledged that a worst earthquake with tsunami and radiation leaks in Japan on March 11 should only have short-term impacts on Thailand, and that she has ordered Thai commercial offices overseas to organise more roadshows to boost Thai exports in Japanese towns unaffected by the disaster. Porntiva said her ministry is also directing marketing campaigns to other potential economies instead, including China and other Southeast Asian nations.
According to the Thai commerce minister, if the situation in Japan returns to normal, Thailand should be able to export more products to the Japanese economy this year--on top of last year's exports worth 20.42 billion US dollars, or at least some 20-per cent increase from 2009.
Porntiva also said she does not believe that ongoing political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa will significantly affect Thai exports, projecting that negative impacts should only be limited to some one per cent of the overall Thai exports to the oil-rich regions, but she noted that factors which could mostly affect Thai exports this year include the fluctuation of global oil prices and domestic problems.
