Thailand woos Japan’s auto investment

BANGKOK, March 18 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Industry has ordered the Board of Investment (BOI) to find ways to encourage Japan to invest more in auto part production in Thailand in order to solve the problem of auto part shortages.
Thai Vice Industry Minister Phutthiphong Punnakun admitted that the Thai automobile industry might face the shortage of auto parts, as present stocks could be used up in two weeks or a month; so he told the BOI to look for ways to encourage Japan auto makers to boost their production in Thailand.
Phutthiphong said he expects the BOI to come up with tax privileges and facilities which can be proposed to a meeting of Thailand's economic ministers within seven days.
Meanwhile, Thai Industry Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat said that a historic disaster in Japan on March 11 should not have any impact on Thailand's auto production target of two million vehicles this year, as the worst natural calamity in Japan's 50-year-post-WWII-period should affect only some items of auto parts Thailand needs to import from Japan.
