THAI insists imports from Japan are safe

BANGKOK, March 18 (TNA) - Thai Airways International (THAI), the national flag carrier, has informed its customers that cargoes from Japan are free from contamination.

Pichai Juenganuwat, director of THAI's cargo and mail department, has confirmed that hazardous substances were simply unable to enter airplanes visiting or flying through Japan, and that all warehouses in Japan, like all those in Thailand, were safe and were able to prevent hazardous contamination.

Pichai said that specialists, including some from the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology, have been checking flights from Japan and have so far found no signs of any contamination.

Meanwhile, Surapol Issarangkun na Ayutthaya, director of THAI's Crisis Management & Operations Center, revealed that a large number of Thai people who booked flights from Japan to Thailand were simply unable to board their planes in time; so THAI flights were forced to take off with many seats vacant. To cope with the problem, he said, THAI has asked the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs to order staff at the Thai embassy in Japan to personally transport Thai passengers to their airports. In addition, THAI is exempting all standard fees for late arrival at airports or flight changes for passengers from Japan. (TNA)
