Thais advised to postpone trips to Japan

BANGKOK, March 18 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Thai people to postpone their trips to Japan until the situation in the disaster-hit nation returns to normal.
Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thani Thongphakdi insisted that Thai people should avoid travelling to Japan at the moment, particularly those who earlier planned to visit areas affected by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11--which has led to radiation leaks from a nuclear power plant.
However, Thai passengers who need to travel to the affected areas in northeastern Japan or even Tokyo inevitably will be given potassium iodide pills to protect themselves from radiation, with Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit saying that some 15,000 iodine pills are now available for handing out to Thai passengers who will depart for Japan at Thailand's Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai and Phuket International Airports as of Friday.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs also suggested Thai nationals living in affected areas in Japan to move southwards and follow updated reports closely, but the ministry has confirmed that there has been no case of any passenger contaminated with radiation from Japan arriving in Thailand so far.
Meanwhile, Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said that the Thai Embassy in Tokyo and the Thai Consulate General in Osaka has prepared evacuation plans for Thai nationals in Japan to South Korea, China and Taiwan--before flying back to Thailand in case of emergency. The Thai foreign minister affirmed that Thai Embassy officials have remained in Tokyo to provide needed assistance to Thai people. (TNA)
