Asian Development Bank $30mln planned assistance for Gilgit- Baltistan two mini hydropower projects
Islamabad, March 17, 2011 (PPI): Asian Development Bank has planned $35 million assistance to develop two mini hydropower projects of Gilgit-Baltistan included in its 2011 assistance pipeline for Pakistan, says Bank’s country director, Pakistan Resident Mission Rune Stroem.
Speaking Thursday at launch of GB’s economic report, he said they include 26MW Shigar Thang & 4MW Chilas project. ADB is largest development partner of Pakistan as reflective in Partnership Strategy-2009-13 for assistance in infrastructure, water, power, transport, etc.
“GB is important to elevate living standards and create economic opportunities. It is equally critical in furthering Pakistan’s economic prospects, ensuring water and energy security. GB has important location and is gateway to Pakistan’s regional cooperation and trade route with China and eventually with Central Asian states,� he stated.
He said major water storage and hydel generation projects of Bhasha & Bunji Dams recognized potential of power generation and help tide over power crisis. Pakistan’s economic and energy security is interconnected with developing GB’s natural resource base, protecting its ecology, environment, upgrading infrastructure, raising quality of its human resources, creating livelihood and employment opportunities.
