Energy situation getting worst in Pakistan: PEW
Islamabad, March 17, 2011 (PPI): The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday said that energy situation is getting worst in Pakistan while government is not ready to deal things on merit or listen to independent experts.
Our enemies are busy in conspiracies to push country into stone age while government as well as private sector is avoiding the threat which is criminal, it said adding that energy crisis is yet to be taken as a serious national issue, says a press release issued here.
Spokesperson of PEW, Mirza Riaz expressed the hope that two-day expo and international conference in Lahore in which experts from twenty countries are participating will furnish some practical suggestions to minimise the energy crisis in Pakistan.
He said that a delegation of PEW, led by its president Dr. Murtaza Mughal will also participate in the event being organised by Solar Society of Pakistan. Dr. Mughal will also read a paper on the occasion.
The spokesperson said that PEW has been trying to suggest workable solutions to the energy crisis since years. The suggestions include proper exploitation of Thar Coal reserves, which offer more energy than the oil and gas reserves of Saudi Arabia, and Iran put together.
It is also pushed for preferring hydel power over rental power which is economical and durable, building new dams and de-silting Mangla and Tarbela. Government has poured Rs 80 billion of taxpayers’ money into controversial rental power projects with little output, he said.
It has also called for using Reko Dek minerals to retire entire foreign and domestic debt and pushed promotion of alternative energy to minimise dependence on imported fuel that cost around USD 12 billion per annum. He said that majority of the suggested energy conservation measures fell on deaf ears.
