Thailand Trade Representative believes Japan will recover soon

BANGKOK, March 17 (TNA) - Thailand Trade Representative Kiat Sittheeamorn said on Thursday that he believes disaster-hit Japan will recover soon because of its high capacity in several areas, as well as its disciplined and quality people, insisting that Thailand will do the best to assist Japan.

Kiat acknowledged it is now too early to estimate economic damage caused to Japan as a result of a massive earthquake and tsunami which struck the country's northeastern region last Friday (Mar 11), saying that he wants the situation in Japan to become more stable, and that the top priority of the Thai government is to bring Thai people back home as soon as possible. Regarding assistance for Japan, Kiat noted that Thailand is sending food and necessities to affected areas.

According to the Thailand Trade Representative, the Kingdom's marketing campaigns will now focus on Latin America due to its high economic potential. Thailand plans to boost trade with the region by three times over the next three years to about 13.5 billion US dollars, from some 4.5 billion US dollars currently, with Thai automobile, textile, food and jewelry industries being the spearhead.

Kiat said Thailand has also been competing for major construction projects in India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bahrain and he is confident of a further growth of Thai trade and exports this year. (TNA)
